Measurement and Main Results: Hyperoxic pups that received 5.5% carbon dioxide had significantly reduced interstitial thickening, neutrophil influx and a significant increase in alveolar number, relative to air-exposed pups. Increased tyrosine nitration, a footprint for peroxynitrite-mediated reactions, and a significant pruning of small peripheral pulmonary vessels, were observed with hyperoxia but were attenuated by the addition of 5.5% carbon dioxide. Conclusions: We conclude that the addition of inhaled 5.5% carbon dioxide offers a significant degree of protection in an animal model of chronic neonatal lung injury, likely through its inhibition of phagocyte influx.
